US Media Selects Top 10 "Fuel-efficient" Models in 2016

Recently, US media have selected the top ten fuel-efficient vehicle models, and unsurprisingly, this list is still dominated by new energy vehicles. However, for the sake of fairness, a distinction has been made between new energy vehicles (EV, PHEV) and conventional fuel vehicles. Judging from previous lists, Japanese hybrid models have always been evergreens in the conventional fuel vehicle sector, but in the new energy vehicle sector, Japanese models have almost disappeared...

In addition, for readers' better understanding, we first give a brief introduction to "MPGe". To facilitate the distinction of fuel economy between EVs and PHEVs/conventional fuel vehicles, the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) adopted an energy equivalent calculation method: it regards 33.7 kWh of electricity as equivalent to 1 gallon of gasoline, converts and calculates the energy efficiency of EVs, uses "MPGe" as the unit to distinguish it from "MPG" used for conventional gasoline vehicles. A higher value of this unit is better, which is exactly the opposite of the fuel consumption value per 100 kilometers we commonly use.

The following is the top 10 list of new energy vehicles:

It can be seen from this list that not all pure electric vehicles are fuel-efficient. Many readers may not understand why pure electric vehicles can not compare with the BMW i3, an extended-range model (with an engine). This is because the EPA has carried out an "equivalent" unit conversion between electricity consumption and fuel consumption (33.7 kWh of electricity is equivalent to 1 gallon of gasoline). Therefore, after conversion, the farther a vehicle travels per unit of electricity or per gallon of gasoline, the higher its ranking. This is very similar to Honda's energy-saving vehicle competition, and this algorithm is closer to the facts. It is different from China's fuel consumption algorithm. For plug-in hybrids, domestic manufacturers claim that the fuel consumption is within 2 liters, but the actual fuel consumption experienced by car owners is probably 8 to 9 liters.
